Distinguishing intrinsic criticality from latent drive in spiking and EEG models
The dominant thread is how intrinsic dynamical properties of neural populations, rather than external drive or energy state, account for critical-like behavior. The spiking-population preprint proposes perturbation-response measurements to distinguish intrinsic criticality from correlations driven by latent inputs, a distinction that observed correlations alone may not resolve. A separate preprint simulates a gLIF network with Q10 metabolic scaling in Brian2 and reports that energy state alters excitability, STDP and synchrony, suggesting metabolic state as an additional modulator of collective dynamics. The EEG preprint builds a two-dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck numerical twin with interpretable parameters to reproduce transient spindle bursts under anesthesia. What is new is an explicit experimental test separating intrinsic from latent criticality, combined with mechanistic links to energetics and interpretable stochastic models of transient oscillations.
