About TrendBio

TrendBio tracks what is moving in computational biology and bioinformatics. Each day, it groups related research, tools and industry activity into topics and ranks the Top 40, with evidence and a synthesis for readers who already know the field.

Sources

We collect preprints from bioRxiv and arXiv, published papers from PubMed, code and tool activity from GitHub, and announcements from industry feeds. Each topic links to its underlying evidence, with preprints linked to their published versions when known.

How ranking works

Topics are ranked using four weighted terms: rise (45%), diversity (25%), code velocity (15%), and volume (15%). Rise compares recent activity with a topic’s historical baseline, or a typical cluster when history is limited; diversity rewards a mix of evidence types, code velocity measures GitHub star gains, and volume reflects item count. A small penalty for topics that ranked yesterday encourages rotation.

Selection reserves 1 topic per represented category, then fills by score with at most 8 per category. The selected topics appear in score order; quieter days may have fewer than 40 topics.

Weekly (ISO Monday–Sunday) and calendar-month rankings sum each topic’s stored daily scores, break ties by days ranked then unique items, reserve one place per represented category and cap each at five within the Top 20, and show days ranked, best rank, unique items and maximum rise for the period; incomplete periods are labelled “so far”.
