Temporal dynamics arbitrate among candidate principles of primate and network vision
The dominant thread is the use of temporal structure as the criterion for judging computational principles of visual representation. A preprint comparing human and macaque inferior temporal (IT) responses with video and image networks reports that predictive world models best match IT and generalize across appearance changes. A published noisy recurrent ventral-stream model shows that architecture sets representation timescales and that layer functions shape the intrinsic timescale order. What is new is that dynamics and timescales serve as the discriminating criterion among candidate principles. A separate preprint on a three-stage weighted neural ring model of finite-size target perception and selection, framed as an energy minimization problem, addresses a decision-level question and is only loosely tied to this thread.
