Mechanistic extensions of epidemic compartment models with analytical threshold results
The dominant thread is augmenting compartmental epidemic formulations with an added mechanistic layer and coupling that structure to analytical or calibration-based outputs. The agent-based study couples opinion dynamics to compartmental spread, with opinion-dependent transmission improving calibration. A chain SIR model indexes compartments by reinfection count and derives an analytical wave speed for reinfection-space traveling waves. A hybrid framework links equation-based and individual-based models through Madrid commuting networks, where mass gatherings amplify and accelerate citywide spread. A multi-scale immuno-epidemiological model connects within-host immune dynamics and symptom scores to symptomatic behavior change in influenza-like illness. The shared element is the coupling of added structure to epidemic dynamics; the novelty lies mainly in the reinfection-indexed traveling-wave formulation and opinion feedback on transmission.
